Upcoming Walk: Sunday, Nov 26th 2017, Seal Bay Park

Nov 26, Sunday: Seal Bay Park, Bates road entrance

Loys will be leading the Seal Bay Park walk. We will be meeting at the main parking lot on Bates Road. The featured items on the walk will be trees and lichens. CVN was instrumental in getting this area some level of protection, although it took something like 30 years to achieve. Unfortunately, the park is still not securely removed from the possibility of further development, although that is unlikely to happen anytime soon. The Park is currently undergoing a review of its Master Plan by CVRD.

For an idea of what to expect at the park check out our own CVNS website at this link: http://comoxvalleynaturalist.bc.ca/nature-viewing-guide/3-strait-of-georgiaoyster-bay-area/seal-bay/

Upcoming Walk: Saturday, Nov 18th 2017, Bear Creek Park

Nov 18, Saturday, Bear Creek Park at Black Creek

Bear Creek is one of our most popular walks, and there may still be a few spawning salmon in the creeks at this time. Meet at Courtenay Country Market to car pool or at the Bear Creek Park parking lot off Macaulay Road (off Hamm & the Old Island Highway) by the Yellow gate. There is a steep hill down from the parking lot, but otherwise the walk is mostly flat alongside Bear Creek and the Oyster River. A toilet is available near the Hatchery building.

Upcoming Walk: Sunday, Nov 12th 2017, Goose Spit Bird Viewing

Nov 12, Sunday: Goose Spit Bird Viewing, DND Gate, This walk will not have a leader.

Fall often brings a large variety of water and shore birds to our coastline, and a walk along the shores of Goose Spit is a great place to see them. Be sure to bring your binoculars, dress for the weather, and bring water. Park at the end of the road, near the DND gates. This walk usually goes around HMCS Quadra and the First Nations Territory at the end of the Spit. There is a toilet near the DND Gate.

Botany Outing Report: Mushrooms, Oct 16th, 2017

Greetings all,
Although it was unfortunate that Shannon was unable to join us on Monday due to illness and the weather was less than ideal, we did have a productive gathering over lunch, thanks to all the contributions of specimens.  The slides illustrate what we looked at- Polypores and Inky caps being prominent.   I have typed up a list (Mushroom list – Botany Group Oct 16-17) of what we had in the trays – you can look them up on E-flora for illustrations and species descriptions.

I took  a spore print (see photo) of one of the medium sized white mushrooms ( brought by Ruth) that looked as if it could be an agaric, but its white spore  rather than dark, together with the persistent ring around the stipe, confirmed that it was Leucoagaricus leucothites ( the “leuco”- part  from the Greek for white).

We did venture out a few paces from the house to see the Earthstars under the Red Cedar. They are one of the more unusual fungi around.  See photo attached.

Further to the fleshy orange mushroom that was found beside the trail to Battleship Lake, my original ID as Echinodontium tinctorium is not correct. I sent photos to Shannon and she thinks it is likely Pycnoporellus alboluteus  – and indeed the description and photos of that in E-flora look closer to what we have.  I’ll send her a small piece so that she can examine it under the microscope and confirm.  The Echinodontium was interesting for its uses by First Nations, such as face paint and according to Nancy Turner’s sources in a salve to protect the skin from sunburn or insect bites,  but the growth pattern did not quite fit.  And in this case a spore print would have been tricky to obtain.

Out next gathering will be on November 13th –  if you have any requests or suggestions for a venue and focus, please let me know. We could try Nymph Falls or Seal Bay Park for mushrooms, since the recent downpours might have provided enough moisture to entice some fungi to send up their fruiting bodies.

Alison

Upcoming Walk: Sunday, Nov 5th 2017, Nymph Fall Park

Nov 5, Sunday: Dulce Hamilton Mushroom Public Walk, Nymph Falls Park

This walk is in memory of Dulce Hamilton, and long-term member of CVN who died last year, and this was one of her favorite walks. Alison and Loys will lead an autumn mushroom walk along the shores of Puntledge River at Nymph falls in this very popular Public walk. Participants will meet at the main entrance of Nymph falls Regional Park on Forbidden Plateau road at 9 am.

The walk is on forest trails, and includes a gentle incline on the way out as you go upstream. Dress for the weather, and wear sturdy shoes. The walk will be about 3 hours long, with many stops to observe the various fungi along the paths.

Note that there is no access to Forbidden Plateau Road form the new highway; you will have to access the road from Piercy Road. This public walk is limited to 40 people.

Loys will lead a walk through the Ruth Masters Greenway and along the Puntledge River.  Meet at Powerhouse Road Park entrance to Ruth Masters Greenway. Entrance is on the east side of Powerhouse Road, between 1st Street and Mellifera Place.

For many years Ruth was an active member of CVNS, and 18 acres of this park was donated to residents of the Comox Valley in care of the Comox Valley Land Trust and the Land Conservancy of BC. The walk is flat alongside the river, but there is one moderately steep hill getting down from the parking lot.

To learn more about Ruth Masters and her history, check out this link to an interview done in 2014.

Botany Outing Report: Little River, Sept. 11, 2017

Greetings Botanists,

For those who did not attend the September CVN General Meeting, here is Helen’s report on the Botany Group Walk that took place on September 11th.

“ It was a great day for the Botany walk, and those who joined Robbie and me were Isabella, Ruth, Fran, Diane, Karen, Betty, and Sharon.  We walked around the ponds, then crossed the bridge to the meadow along the Little River, took the beach access, and walked the beach to Little River Beach, where we had lunch at a picnic table, courtesy of BC Ferries, then walked back along the Little River behind the Maintenance yard, back over the bridge, and returned to our vehicles.

Plants still flowering included Artemisia campestris, northern wormwood;  Madia glomerata, clustered tarweed; Leontodon saxatilis, hairy hawkbit;  Orobanche californica, California broomrape;  Polygonum spergulariiforme, spurry knotweed;  and along the beach,  Cakile edentula, American searocket;  and Abronia latifolia, yellow sand verbena. See attached photos (The populations in front of the first two homes adjacent to the BC Ferries maintenance yard are being damaged and some plants have been destroyed.)”

The group also saw a splendid specimen of  “ Chicken of the Woods” = Laetiporus conifericola  -see attached photo. The soft outer edges are edible when young.

Since our usual gathering day, the  second Monday of the month, falls on Thanksgiving, we will meet instead on October 16th With mycologist Shannon Berch as guest.  She will have been on Quadra at the  Quadra Wild Mushroom Festival Oct 13-15. (for  event information  see http://www.harbourliving.ca/event/quadra-island-mushroom-festival/2017-10-13/  )

The plan is to have lunch (12.30 ish) with Shannon at 6069 Tsolum River Road, followed by an afternoon walk and workshop.  The location for the walk will in part depend on where I can find a representative range of mushrooms. Nymph Falls is usually a good spot, but we may well simply remain on Tsolum River Road.   I will let you know closer to the 16th.

This year has been notable so far for the almost total dearth of good specimens of fungi.  The drought conditions in July, August and early September could not have been worse.  Towards the end of September we have started to see someexamples such as the “Chicken of the Woods”  or the choice Bear’s Head –  Hericium abietis.

On the trail up to Battleship Lake in Strathcona Park there were quite a number of the Chroogomphos tomentosus  that can initially be mistaken for a chanterelle and the so-called vase chanterelle ( Gomphus floccosus)  has also been appearing.

But I have yet to find a true chanterelle, and the usual profusion of Russulas and and troops of Mycenas are simply absent.

So I for one am happy to have rain this weekend!

Enjoy your Thanksgiving,  Alison
