Sunday, January 22th: Ruth Masters Greenway, 9:30 am

Loys and Alison will lead a walk through the Ruth Masters Greenway and along the Puntledge River.  Meet at Powerhouse Road Park  entrance to Ruth Masters Greenway 9:30 am. Entrance is on the east side of Powerhouse Road, between 1st Street and Mellifera Place.
For many years Ruth was an active member of CVNS and local groups, and 18 acres of this park was donated to residents of the Comox valley in care of the Comox Valley Land trust and the Land Conservancy of BC. Guest Speaker: Sarah Dudas, ‘Microplastics in the Environment’, Sun. Jan. 15,2017

Comox Valley Nature is pleased to host Dr. Sarah Dudas for a lecture on “Microplastics in the environment and implications for the Salish Sea”. Recently featured on the CBC for her work on microplastics, Dr. Sarah Dudas is Canada research chair at the Shellfish Research Centre at Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo , BC. Her research of micro-plastic impacts on marine food chains has drawn international attention, and on the national webinar series of the Canadian Society for Environmental Biologists. She is currently supervising a project tagging some 3,000 shellfish Vancouver Island to study the impacts of micro-plastics on marine food-chains.

The impact of micro-plastics ingested by marine organisms is a growing recent concern. Relatively little is known about the fate of micro-plastics and their ultimate potential impacts on marine food chains. The ability of micro-plastics to sorb a large variety of chemicals makes them a potential danger for natural ecosystems and human health. Dr. Sarah Dudas , together with Dr. Katie Davidson, is the author of one of the few recent in-depth study on the presence of micro-plastics on manila clams in Baynes Sound and potential impacts of micro-plastics. She is currently undertaking a project to monitor some 3,000 shellfish in the Salish Sea.

The lecture is on Sunday, January 15 and will start after introductions at 7pm in the Rotary Room of the Filberg Seniors Centre 411 Anderton, Courtenay. Lecture is free, though a $4 contribution from non-members is appreciated. New memberships are always welcomed.

Nature Outing Report: Royston Seaside Trail, Jan. 7,2017

27 hardy CVNS members came out for the first outing of the new year, along the Royston Seaside Trail starting at the Royston wrecks breakwater. Art Martell gave a background on the K’omoks Important Bird & Biodiversity Area, the second most important IBA in BC, particularly for congregations of wintering waterfowl. Kathryn Clouston & Bill Heidrick provided detail on the eelgrass planting and shoreline restoration work of Project Watershed in the area. Along the 1 km trail northward there were several opportunities to scan for waterbirds, including good looks at Common Loon, Hooded Merganser, Common Goldeneye, and Surf Scoter. Several interpretive signs along this short but rewarding Regional District trail highlight its numerous points of interest including its fascinating history as a former logging railway right-of-way.

Upcoming Walk: Sunday, Dec 4th 2016, Kye Bay

Sunday, December 4th, Kye Bay
Loys and Alison Maingon will lead a walk along the beach at Kye Bay, below the Comox Airport. The high bluffs and cobble beach make for an interesting area, even with a 5metre high tide at the time. Wear sturdy boots with good traction for the slippery rocks, and dress for the weather and wind. Bring water as there are not facilities on the beach
Meet at the Kye Bay parking lot (Elks Park) at the corner of Kye Bay and Windslow Roads.

Upcoming Walk: Saturday, Nov. 26th 2016, Goose Spit Public Walk, 9:00 am

Saturday, November 26th, Goose Spit Public Walk, 9:00 am
Alison and Loys Maingon will lead a Public Walk along Goose Spit, from the DND gate north to the Willemar Bluffs. Like much of our coast line, this area has been subjected to erosion, but still offers stunning views across the Strait and some interesting ecological micro-niches.  The 3.2 metre low tide occurs at 9:30 am. Dress for the wind and weather, and wear boots with good traction as the cobble stone beach can be slippery. Bring water, and there is a porta-potty in the parking lot.
Meet at parking lot nearest DND entrance at 9:00 am.

Upcoming Walk: Saturday, Nov. 19th 2016, Maple Lake Public Walk, 9:00 am

Saturday, November 19th, Maple Lake Public Walk, 9:00 am
Loys and Alison Maingon will lead a walk part way around Maple Lake.  Since 2013 the Maple Lake Fundraising Committee has been working towards  buying this 20 hectare lake and its surrounding wood lands and wetlands so that it may be brought into the public domain. CVN has played a part in this endeavour with the Botany Surveys led by Helen Robinson.
This is an easy walk, with little incline and good trails for the most part, but as always dress for the weather and wear sturdy hiking boots. Bring water as there are no facilities in the area.     A car pool will form at the Harmston Road (Courtenay) Church at 9:00 am or trailhead at 9:15 am. The trail head is at the end of Minto Road (off Comox valley Parkway, just past the gravel pit. Keep right past the old graveyard, and under Highway 19.
