Guest Speaker: Industrial Agriculture, Engineered Food & Your Health: Sun. Sep. 20, 2015

To begin our annual lecture series on the Comox Valley environment, Comox Valley Nature would like to introduce Thierry Vrain who will speak about engineering technology, about the current success of the RoundUp Ready technology and the implications of the practice of spraying food crops during the growth cycle up to just before harvest. Vrain speaks about the pollution of glyphosate residues in bread and meat and cheese, and much of our prepared food. He also speaks of the effects of this anti-bacterial agent masquerading as an herbicide on the human microbiome and the consequences of following an antibiotic shaped by glyphosate.

Dr. Thierry Vrain is a retired soil biologist and genetic engineer who spent his whole research career with the Department of Agriculture in Canada. He was the head of a research group of 40 professionals in Biotechnology, the Vice President and President of national and international associations of soil biologists, and an Associate Editor of several scientific Journals in Europe and in the USA. He is now raising the alarm about the current excesses of the gene revolution and chemical agriculture, particularly herbicide contamination of engineered crops and food. Dr. Vrain lives on Vancouver Island on the West Coast of Canada.

This lecture “Industrial Agriculture, engineered food and your health” will take place at the Florence Filberg Seniors Centre at 7pm (sharp) September 20, 2015.

Comox Valley Nature is a non-profit society affiliated to BC Nature consisting only of unpaid volunteers. CVN fulfills its educational mandate by hosting monthly lectures, organizing free weekly guided hikes for members, and a free monthly walk open to the public. The society also undertakes a variety of environmental projects. Aside from its main activity as a non-profit, Comox Valley Nature also supports specialized groups (Birding, Botany, Conservation, Garry Oak Restoration, Wetland Restoration, Photography and Young Naturalists) all of which have separate monthly activities. Membership in BC Nature and Comox Valley Nature is $30 per adult and $40 for a family.

Founded in 1966, it is one of the oldest environmental societies on the North Island. Meetings and lectures of the Comox Valley Naturalists Society are held on the third Sunday of most months at the Florence Filberg Centre, 411 Anderton, Courtenay. Meetings and guided walks are open to the public, including children and youth. Lecture is free, though a $4 contribution from non-members is appreciated. New memberships are always welcomed.
