In the News! - 2006April 23: Earth Day Planting
Comox Valley Young Naturalists Club members Leo and Marin assist members of the Comox Valley Naturalists Society in planting native species and removing broom at the Courtenay Riverway Park on the Earth Day weekend. The Comox Valley Naturalists are stewards of the park and over the years have planted native trees, shrubs, and flowers, as well as controlling invasive species. The Young Naturalists planted tall Oregon grape, blue elderberry, camas and balsamroot, which are species associated with Garry oak ecosystems. Discovering nature first hand is the main purpose of the Comox Valley Young Naturalists. March 26 : Naturalists Airpark Signage Re-installed
Members of the Comox Valley Naturalists Society recently re-installed plant information signage at the Courtenay Riverway Park. The green information signs describe the native species many of which were planted by the Comox Valley Naturalists Society. The CVNS have made a long-term commitment to be stewards of the park and over the years have planted native trees, shrubs, and flowers, as well as controlling invasive species such as broom and blackberry. The native species planted are associated with Garry oak ecosystems which would be indigenous to this area. The project is being done in partnership with the City of Courtenay and is part of a broader initiative to remove invasive plants from the Courtenay River estuary and adjacent areas, with funding from several sources including the Regional District.
