SUMMARY:Dune Stories
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate our 60th anniversary we offer this opportunity to learn more about a unique ecosystem in the Comox Valley. \nHave you ever wondered about the presence of the dunes between Curtis Road and\nLazo Road? Or like me\, didn’t even know that these dunes exist? When and how did they form? How can this sandy environment support such varied flora?\nIf only they could talk\, what stories they might tell of their creation and development\nover the millennia. \n \nPlease join us on our April 25th Knowledge Walk “ Dune Stories” from 11:00 am to 12:30\npm. Lead by Heather Blyth (Geologist\, ret’d.) and Fred Newhouse (Forester)\, this walk\nwill focus on the geological history of this part of Comox\, and the ecological\ndevelopment of the dunes.\nThe walk will commence on a rocky beach and continue on well maintained trails that\ncriss-cross the dunes and the glacially created kettles. There are inclines that may be\nchallenging for some walkers. Appropriate footwear is recommended. The total distance\nwill likely not be more than 3k. April weather can be wet and cool\, so please wear\nappropriate outerwear. The workshop will be cancelled in the event of strong winds and\nheavy rain. \nREGISTRATION required using RSVP link below.   This event is free\, but donations are welcome. Specific information regarding location will be provided upon registration. \nFor more information\,  to add your name to a waitlist or to cancel your reservation\, email:  events@cvnature.ca.

SUMMARY:Trees and Drought
DESCRIPTION:Drought in the summer is hard on plants in our environment. The trees in your yard may have begun to respond to this stress. Our next knowledge walk will help you to learn how to keep your trees healthy and thriving. \n \nJoin Verna Mumby as we look at the effects of drought and climate change on trees. \nThis knowledge walk will be at the Airpark. Taking the trees there as a sample\, we will look for signs of drought stress\, and indications of healthy growth. We will examine factors such as hydrology\, disease vectors and soil compaction. \nWe will discuss watering and other methods of mitigating stress. \nMeeting location will be sent before the walk. \nBring binoculars to examine higher branches. Wear sturdy footwear and dress for the weather. We will be walking on the airpark paths. \nREGISTRATION required using RSVP link below. An easy 1 km walk on a wheelchair accessible paved path.   Sorry\, no dogs. This event is free\, but donations are welcome.
