SUMMARY:NATIVE BEES AND POLLINATORS
DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss this opportunity!  Sign up now or email events@cvnature.ca to get on the waitlist \nJoin Bonnie Zand on a 1.5 hour walk around the airpark\, learning about the diversity of native bees and other pollinators found on the native flowers present in the park. From fuzzy bumble bees to tiny sweat bees to buzzing bee mimicking hover flies\, as long as the weather cooperates we will be able to see many examples of how flower diversity drives pollinator diversity\, as well as examples of important habitat features for nesting and overwintering of our essential native pollinators. \nBonnie Zand is an RPBio based out of the Comox Valley. She works in the intersections of pollinators and agriculture\, running an IPM consulting company and leading the Pollinators in Vancouver Island Agriculture Project. Bonnie is also a board member of the Native Bee Society of BC and is the BC instructor for the Master Melittologist Program. In her free time she plants for native bees\, and raises goats\, garlic and an eight year old on her hobby farm.” \nThis will be a short flat walk on paved path.  No dogs please!  This is a free event but donations to CVN are welcome.

SUMMARY:Caring for Trees in a Time of Drought
DESCRIPTION:Cancelled \nSaturday\, October 25th from 11:00 to 12:30  \nThis summer’s drought was hard on plants in our environment. The trees in your yard may have responded to this stress. Our next knowledge walk will help you to learn how to keep your trees healthy and thriving. \nJoin Verna Mumby as we look at the effects of drought and climate change on trees. \nThis knowledge walk will be held on a semi-rural property in east Courtenay. Taking these trees as a sample\, we will look for signs of drought stress\, and indications of healthy growth. We will examine factors such as hydrology\, disease vectors and soil compaction. \nWe will discuss watering and other methods of mitigating stress. \nMeeting location will be sent before the walk. \nBring binoculars to examine higher branches. Wear sturdy footwear and dress for the weather. We will be walking on uneven ground and over tree roots and rocks. \nThis walk will be cancelled if winds are high.
