<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In life they say that there is always a fork in the road for which one needs to decide which direction to take. As a senior biologist with Alberta Conservation Association, but even before, my career has not been directed by the road taken (or not) but by the path to the fence. As with the pronghorn, I may not have found my way across the fence yet, but it has led me to being the 2024 recipient of the Berrendo Award at the Western Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies’ 30th Biennial Pronghorn Workshop.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Wishing you all a belated happy solstice and a Merry Christmas. A rare white Christmas this year! Between deluges of rain and the current wintery state, botany walks haven&#8217;t got off the ground, but I am hopeful that we will get out to look at plants in the coming spring.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the meantime, there are many winter-interest things to look at for the observant naturalist. I found some nice ice formations a few days ago in Roy Morrison Nature Park, and the snow is great for studying bird and mammal tracks!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This talk is open to CVN members and the public (see the registration link below).</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Coastal bears need large old-growth structures such as hollow trees for winter dens. In most of coastal BC these structures are not protected and are disappearing due to forest harvesting. The implications of this will be discussed.</p>
