The next meeting of the Comox Valley Naturalists Society is scheduled for 7:00 pm Sunday, May 20 in the Rotary Hall of the Florence Filberg Centre. This week's meeting will feature a slide show and talk on a naturalists trip to Cuba. In February of this year, several members of our club toured the western half of Cuba with a focus on birds. This presentation will provide an overview of the trip and should be helpful for others planning similar excursions. During the tour, many interesting and colourful birds were seen including the Cuban trogan, known locally as the tocororo, the national bird of Cuba, the bee hummingbird, the world's smallest bird. and the red-legged thrush. The tour took us to several national parks and reserves to observe the birds and plant life and also to several historical cities, including Trinidad and Havana. This will not be strictly a presentation about birds but will touch on plants, the landscape and Cuban culture. |
