Botany Outing Report: Maple Lake, Apr.25,2016

On Monday April 25th a dozen of the Botany Group accompanied Helen on her preliminary foray to Maple Lake to compile a plant list for the area. We walked along the east side of the Lake in glorious sunshine with spectacular views across the lake and forest to the Beauforts. It was hard to imagine that the Inland Highway and the gravel pits are so close by.

Helen reports that we now have 87 species of trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants, ferns, and mosses ( almost three times what was identified in October 2011); she says “…to me, it was the diversity of species that was astounding. The number of western dogwood trees and seeing the vari-leaved collomia (Collomia heterophylla) were highlights.” The collomia was just beginning to bloom and it seems no one in fact took a photograph! Helen plans to return in about a month for a second examination of the area.
